The Romans used their "mulsum" with a wide variety of ingredients mixed against a variety of diseases: with the addition of finely chopped hazelnuts to combat chronic coughs; mingled with rye, it cures hip pain; Mixed with pea flour, it is used by women to regain a certain fullness after illness and is useful in cases of exhaustion. Mead was also often used to sweeten bitter-tasting medicines.
